Benefits of learning a Third Language
Foreign Languages

There is better chances of obtaining overseas scholarships in France, Germany and Japan, other things being equal and greater job opportunities in multi-national corporations both locally and overseas.

Asian Languages

There is better chances of obtaining overseas scholarships in France, Germany and Japan, other things being equal and greater job opportunities in multi-national corporations both locally and overseas.

Higher Malay

Students are able to enjoy a concession of 2 points for admission to a junior college of their choice, provided they obtained grades of A1 to C6 in both Higher Malay and the English Language at the GCE 'O' Level Examination and provided they meet the junior college admission criteria.

Students are considered to have satisfied the language requirement for pre-university admission if they score at least C6 in English Language and E8 in Higher Malay. They can be exempted from doing Malay at AO level if they obtained D7 or better in Higher Malay at the GCE 'O' Level Examination.

Students are considered to have satisfied the mother tongue requirement for university admission if they score at least D7 in Higher Malay.

Admission to the courses
Foreign Language as a Third Language

For admission to the Ministry of Education Language Centre, students must be ranked as one of the top 10% of the students who passed the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).

Students must be a Singapore Citizen (SC) or Singapore Permanent Resident (SP), or child of SC/SPR.

In the event that the number of applicants exceeds the number of vacancies, selection will be based on each applicant's PSLE results.

Asian Language as a Third Language
For admission to an Asian Language course, students must be from an Express or Normal (Academic) course.
For application to study Arabic/ Bahasa Indonesia, student must be a Singapore citizen or Singapore permanent resident, or child of SC/SPR.
Students applying for Malay (Special Programme) are not eligible to apply if they have offered Malay subject at PSLE (or equivalent).
Students applying for Bahasa Indonesia are not eligible to apply if they have offered Malay/ Higher Malay at PSLE (or equivalent).

Choice of courses
Students who are Singapore citizens (SC) or Singapore permanent residents (SPR) or children of SC/SPR are eligible for any of the programmes, although the choice of a programme will depend on the Mother Tongue taken at the PSLE :

*Students applying for Japanese are to have prior knowledge of Chinese as the Japanese standard written form uses 'Kanji' i.e. Chinese characters.

Students from government/ government-aided/ independent school do not need to pay fees to attend lessons in MOELC.

Testing and evaluation

Students' progress is monitored at regular intervals through quizzes, common tests and an End-of-Year examination.

At the end of Secondary 4, students attempt the GCE O Level examination, and at the end of JC1, those taking French, German or Japanese attempt the GCE A Level examination at H1 level.
Students are also encouraged to measure their proficiency against the various language proficiency examinations conducted by French, German and Japanese institutions.
Higher Malay students attempt the GCE O Level Malay Language examination in Secondary 3, and the GCE O Level Higher Malay examination in Secondary 4.

Textbooks
The titles in use may be purchased from the Bookshop at the Ministry of Education Language Centre (Bishan campus). French and Japanese books may be purchased from the Newton campus bookshop .
